Father Lambertus is the monastic name for Paul Vandermeulen. He had to interrupt his priestly training because the First World War broke out. He volunteered as a stretcher bearer. Father Lambertus devoted himself to the Flemish soldiers at the front and therefore played an important role in the Flemish emancipation struggle. In 1919 he was ordained a priest and served as army chaplain. He was also a celebrated leader among the student youth. In 1932 he unexpectedly made his entry into the

Trappist Monastery. Later, Father Lambertus set up a mission station in what was then the Congo.

Paul Vandermeulen, Father Lambertus, is one of the figures who fought with word and deed for the Flemish, the Flemish language and the Flemish culture from a deeply rooted sense of justice. In his honor, a street was named after him in Bree and a small monument was erected where a small floral tribute is brought to this frontman in the Flemish struggle every year on the Flemish holiday.
