Bifurcation is the rare forking of a watercourse with the water being distributed between two river systems: this is what happens here with the Krollbach. The actual Krollbach reaches the western North Sea after 480 km via Haustenbach, Lippe and Rhine, the Schwarzwasserbach reaches the central North Sea after 440 km via Hallerbach and Ems. The Schwarzwasserbach - also called the "Health Stream" - was artificially canalized using an already existing arm of the Krollbach and led through the town center as a fresh water supply: the background was the decline in water management since secularization (1803), especially in the area of the moats of the Hövelhof. Ponds and ditches became swampy and turned into a stinking breeding ground for the malaria pathogen. The restoration of the formerly functioning water management through the Schwarzwasserbach was able to finally banish malaria - known in Hövelhof as "swamp fever" - in conjunction with the "Gesundheitsallee" (health avenue) through the Hövelhof Forest in 1827.

The bifurcation of the Krollbach marks a fascinating section where the river splits into two branches. This natural division creates a picturesque and diverse ecosystem along its course.

If you're already here, it's worth visiting the Ice Summit. 🍦
