From 1589 to 1603 Schloss Höchstädt was built in the style of the late Renaissance. For many years it served the princess Anna von Jülich-Kleve-Berg as a widow's seat. The new castle building required the construction of a box house for the storage of the dutiful grain to be delivered, which until then was kept in the old castle and other buildings. In 1602, the foundation stone was laid on behalf of Count Palatine Phillipp Ludwig von Pfalz-Neuburg. Twelve years later, the stately building could be handed over to its purpose.
