The Maasheggen landscape consists of a mosaic of small meadows in the floodplains, bordered by a woven fence of primarily hawthorn hedges. In the past, Maasheggen hedges were found in many more places along the Brabant and Limburg Meuse rivers. Due to land consolidation, scaling up, and the ease of barbed wire, these hedges have disappeared in many places. In 2018, UNESCO designated the Maasheggen a biosphere reserve. As a result, the remaining Maasheggen are protected.
