      The gatehouse lives up to its name. If you cross the extraordinary building, for example to get from the butter market to the city centre, the underpass looks like a large gate.

      The gatehouse, built in 1908, has served various purposes in the past: it was used as an emergency shelter for the homeless in the mid-1920s and as a city library in the late 1930s. There were repeated discussions about the possible demolition of the house. At the end of the 1970s it was clear that the gatehouse would be retained and renovated. The Kunstverein Elmshorn e.V. and the Verkehrs- und Bürgerverein e.V. have been based in the gatehouse from the 1980s to the present day.
