The castle has known various periods of decline and prosperity and has been renovated several times throughout history in different styles.

In 1850, the later Baron Alfred Brugmann bought the ruins and carried out many restorations. In 1881, he had them restored by architect Émile Janlet in a kind of Spanish-Flemish style. The castle in this version can be seen on many postcards and drawings from the Belle Époque.

In 1930, Baron Frédéric Brugmann de Walzin had the castle renovated again, this time by architect Octave Flanneau. He opted for the Maasland style that is common in the region, which gave the castle its current, well-known appearance. The works were completed in 1932.

The castle is located in a picturesque area in the province of Namur, on the Lesse River. Construction of the fortress began in the 13th century. In 1554, the castle was burned down by French troops. A horseshoe-shaped Renaissance tower from the 15th century with four gun emplacements has been preserved from this period. Built on a 50-meter-high cliff, the fortress was intended to defend the nearby town of Dinant. In 1850, the ruins were purchased by Baron Alfred Brugmann, who had them restored in the Spanish-Flemish style. A castle in this style can be seen on postcards from the Belle Epoque period.

The last reconstruction took place in 1932 under the reign of Baron Frederik Brugmann in the Mosan Renaissance style. Walzin Castle is privately owned and cannot be visited.
