Giudecca was the neighborhood of the Jews who for centuries supported their industrious presence with that of Christians and who around 1442, at the time of Alfonso the Magnanimous, determined the well-being of the city with commerce, a sector in which they were very expert. Expelled from Sicily in 1493, they left evidence of their presence in the alleys of the neighborhood - via Misericordia, via Mela (now Mistretta) - in the courtyards, in the houses. A newsstand on via Mistretta marked the boundary between the Jewish and Christian quarters.
