Today's landmark of Carnuntum was originally a triumphal arch in front of the walls of the civilian town of Carnuntum.

About 900 m south of the civilian town of Carnuntum, the Heidentor was probably built during the reign of Emperor Constantius II (351-361 AD). The Pagan Gate was once a quadrifrons, a monument with double passageways over four pillars. The outer dimensions were those of a cube with a side length of 14.5 meters. The mighty figure base in the center of the Heidentor suggests the interpretation as a triumphal monument, a passage through the arch was therefore not possible. A larger-than-life Kaiserstaue was probably set up on the approx. 4.3 m high figure base.

It is always interesting to see this impressive building from Roman times.
