Oldest town house. Built around 1240 as the seat of mayors, ministers, pensioners and councilors.
October 8, 2018
The first documented mention of it comes from the year 1319. It served to represent urban-bourgeois power against the castle and church at the other end of the market. Over the centuries the house changed hands as often as its destination. Owned several times by the Landgraves of Hesse, it was used by them as the official residence of the Burgmannen. In the late 15th century, the facade was redesigned in the style of the Renaissance. Shortly after the Second World War, the rear front collapsed and had to be rebuilt. The house is now owned by the city and was gutted and thoroughly renovated in the 1970s.
