The quay pays homage to the historian Godefroid Kurth (1847-1916). The quay took this name in 1932. Previously, it was called the Quai de l'Abattoir.
With a length of approximately 1,170 m, this quay is one of the longest in the city of Liège. It is the last quay on the right bank of the Meuse before it is joined by the Diversion. On the opposite bank is the Quai Saint-Léonard.
Lined by a towing quay, the quay is constantly used as mooring for several barges. Before the drying up in the 19th century of the various arms of the Meuse called biez which flowed into Outremeuse, the place where the quay is located was part of Dos-Fanchon island.
