The Notch is in reference to a "hole" in the rocky saddle between two 12,000-foot peaks (Snowstorm Peak and Cumberland Mountain) in the La Plata Mountains. You can see the city of Durango in one direction and the San Juan Mountains in the other. This is a popular destination for hikers and off-road drivers, alike.
