The place was first mentioned in 1496. On May 17, 1557, the Polish King Sigismund II August granted the town city rights in accordance with Magdeburg law.

In 1656 the place was destroyed by the Tatars. In the second half of the 17th century, the city was struck by the plague. In 1795 Augustów became part of Prussia. In 1807 he came to the Duchy of Warsaw and in 1815 became part of Congress Poland.

The Augustów Canal (Polish: Kanał Augustowski) was built between 1825 and 1839. This was proposed by Poland for UNESCO World Heritage. In 1842 the town became the county seat. In 1899 it was connected to the railway network. Built in the 1840s, the synagogue was destroyed during World War II.

Augustów was occupied by the Red Army from 1939 to 1941 and then by the Wehrmacht until 1944. The city was 70% destroyed during this period and lost a large part of its inhabitants. Since then, the city has been in the critical Suwalki Gap (Wikipedia).
