The Nievelheim sandstone quarries are a small attraction along the 170km long cycling and hiking route “Via Belgica”, which leads from Cologne to Boulogne-sur-Mer.

The pit has been used since Roman times and is still in operation today. The Nievelheim sandstone was used, among other things, in the construction of the Aachen Cathedral.

The stone erected here is intended to commemorate the village of Finkenrath, where the damage caused by the expanding underground mining of coal was so great that all residents eventually had to move away. The earth's surface had sunk up to 10 meters deep. Finkenrath's houses were completely demolished by 1963.
A memorial plaque was once attached to the window-shaped recess in the stone. Unfortunately this was destroyed and not replaced.
