It is located east of the city center of Ålesund at the foot of Mount Aksla, which rises steeply to the east over the park, on the island of Nørvøya. A staircase with 418 steps leads from the city park to the summit of Akslas and the Fjellstua viewpoint there. The city park was created in 1885 and served as a recreational area for the population of Ålesund. The design was based on English landscape gardens. A striking feature of the city park are several small hills with curved park paths on them. There are also two small ponds. From 1921 to 1923, the part of the park facing the street was created. The park was rejuvenated in 2010.

In addition to native plants, notable is a Chilean Araucaria, which is believed to have been brought back from South America by Norwegian sailors in the early 20th century.[1]

There are several monuments and works of art in the park. The Rollo monument, reminiscent of the Viking Rollo, stands centrally on a hill. The Kaiser Wilhelm II monument was erected on the northern edge of the city park. A marker in the park shows the border between Ålesund and Borgund that existed from 1824 to 1875. In addition, the Gener sculpture, created by Per Inge Bjørlo, is located in the city park. At the edge of the park there is a building stone on a hill with the inscription 1885. Wikipedia
