The rough ridge is one of the northernmost alpine tours in the northern Limestone Alps. The approach is typically north-east via Raneck + Bärenlacken. After a long climb through the forest, the trail leads from about 1500m north side just below the ridge along, from about 1600m, the path changes directly to the ridge and swings in several (mostly south-facing) uphills towards Ötscher-Vorgipfel. Before exiting, the steep southern flank with narrow grass bands and rocky steps must be overcome. The climbing-technical difficulties are manageable, but not to be underestimated are the deep views of the upswings and the resulting exposure. There is hardly any insurance, only at individual key points there is assistance by metal pins.

climbing more than hiking and can also be dangerous for the inexperienced.

Descending from Ötscher summit requires more skill than ascending towards. If you’re used to doing via-ferratas then you’ll love it. Otherwise ascend is recommended.
