The only Wittekind monument in Germany commemorates Charlemagne's great opponent. The Saxon Duke Wittekind (also called Widukind) put up bitter resistance against the superior Franks and their Christian faith. The monument commemorates the miracle of the spring and Wittekind's conversion to Christianity. The original by Heinrich Wefing was melted down in 1942. The sculptor Walter Kruse redesigned it in 1959 based on the old template.
