The small area “Baggergrube östlich Basedow” is directly bordered by the larger NSG “Stecknitz-Delvenau-Niederung”, which stretches from Büchen-Dorf to the Elbe.

From the paths by the quarry you always have a beautiful view of the vastness of the lowlands.

NABU nature reserve "Former excavation pit east of Basedow"

      Nature from human hands

The approximately 57 hectare nature reserve in the Duchy of Lauenburg district was declared a nature reserve in 1991.

The area serves to protect and permanently safeguard a small-scale habitat of a particularly protected, regionally typical flora and fauna in a former soil extraction site with several well-structured bottom waters, valuable secondary sites as a habitat for semi-ruderal pioneer and wild herb meadows, approach bushes, bare soil areas and steep walls. To permanently safeguard the core zone, the adjacent areas are included in the nature reserve as a buffer and development zone. These are agricultural land, forest areas and a remnant of heath forest in the north of the area.

View to the east of open, extensively farmed (partly grazed) grassland areas with embedded still waters and individual trees. Beneficial compared to the otherwise predominant normal landscape with corn fields and intensive grassland.
