The Story of François and Thérèse Mitaillé

On August 7, 1944, in the final chaotic weeks of the German occupation, François Mitaillé and his younger sister Thérèse left their home in Penhap, a small hamlet near Marzan. They wanted to return to the farm to tend to the animals. On their way, they were stopped by German soldiers, taken away, and never seen alive again.

Days passed, then weeks. The village lived between hope and fear. Finally, it was their own father who, after an endless search, found their bodies—tortured and shot. The loss was immeasurable, not only for their family, but for the entire community.

The memorial commemorates François and Thérèse, brother and sister, who were torn away by the violence of war in the prime of their lives. It stands here as a silent witness and a warning that freedom can never be taken for granted.
