The artillery batteries of Mauvais Lieu are located in the forest near Villey-Saint-Étienne, northwest of Toul in Lorraine. They were built at the beginning of the 20th century as part of the French fortress belt to protect the city of Toul. The reinforced battery No. 1 was intended for four guns and had shelters for the soldiers as well as ammunition depots. A small field railway supplied the facility with ammunition and materials. Today, the concrete emplacements and shelters are still preserved and are a reminder of the French defense before World War I.
