Local saint Regiswindis
and medieval pilgrimage site Regiswindis was the daughter of Count Ernst von Nordgau. As was customary at the time, she was cared for by a wet nurse. In 839, when the child was 7 years old, the wet nurse killed her in revenge and threw the body into the Neckar, where it was recovered a few days later, fresh and rosy.
This was seen as a sign of special holiness and Regiswindis was soon venerated as a saint.
The bishops of Würzburg promoted this cult by having ever larger churches built in her honor over the next few centuries. In 1227, the year of her canonization, the foundation stone was laid for a magnificent early Gothic, three-aisled basilica. Lauffen thus developed into an important pilgrimage site, from which the local population also benefited. [Text: Lauffen am Neckar leisure map]
