Hiking Highlight
Salt meadows are something special and the view over the vastness and the splendor of color of these areas are incomparable. The surf on the North Sea on the beach invites you to relax and to the soul dangling, to collect shells and run around the waves on the feet. Past the dune landscape, the stilt houses and through the sand you can look up to the horizon - and a little further.☺️

Salt marshes are periodically or irregularly flooded stocks of herbaceous plants from the sea. They form the so-called siltation zone of the North Sea. Here the water meets land. The regular flooding and the high salinity of the sea water require real specialists in the plant world. They have adapted to the conditions in the salt marshes and together with about 400 species of animals form a unique habitat. In addition to the seagrasses, which submerge for hours at each high tide, there are only two flowering plants in the mudflats that endure daily flooding: swelling and silt grass.
