Salt meadows are something special and the view over the vastness and the splendor of color of these areas are incomparable. The surf on the North Sea on the beach invites you to relax and to the soul dangling, to collect shells and run around the waves on the feet. Past the dune landscape, the stilt houses and through the sand you can look up to the horizon - and a little further.☺️

    Here you can run endlessly.
And again and again you can see storks looking for food.

This special mixture of flora and fauna makes the salt marshes in the national park not only interesting for animals, but also for nature enthusiasts and slow-downs. The silence and untouched nature let you forget the stress of everyday life and body, mind and soul can really breathe. The healing effect of a mixture of salty air and the medicinal plants in the meadows is to be noted.
The area of the salt marshes is only a few centimeters above the mean high water level and is regularly flooded. In the process, fine material sinks to the bottom and a silt layer develops, which becomes slightly higher after each flooding. Once the right height is reached, the source of the swelling settles, the first of many plants. The higher the silt layer grows, the more plants can settle. On average, the meadow grows 1 cm per year, which means that it is less frequently flooded and more and more plants can settle. The salt meadow is born.

Salt marshes are periodically or irregularly flooded stocks of herbaceous plants from the sea. They form the so-called siltation zone of the North Sea. Here the water meets land. The regular flooding and the high salinity of the sea water require real specialists in the plant world. They have adapted to the conditions in the salt marshes and together with about 400 species of animals form a unique habitat. In addition to the seagrasses, which submerge for hours at each high tide, there are only two flowering plants in the mudflats that endure daily flooding: swelling and silt grass.

Extensive salt marshes lie between the beach and the seaside resort that stretches from north to south. The approximately one kilometer wide meadows lie in front of the dike and are therefore regularly inundated by storm surges. Few plants can thrive in this salty soil.Since the salt marshes of St. Peter-Ording were created naturally, there are no groups (artificial drainage ditches) here; instead, troughs have formed as natural drainage, which sometimes change their course after storm surges.quermania.de/schleswig-holstein-hamburg/sankt-peter-ording/sankt-peter-ording5.php
