Saint Matthias, to whom this church was dedicated, is one of the twelve apostles from the inner circle of Jesus' disciples. However, unlike the others, he was not called to this office by Jesus himself. After Jesus was handed over by Judas Iscariot and the subsequent crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the eleven remaining apostles prayed for the Holy Spirit and elected a new twelfth apostle. The lot fell on Matthias, as reported in the "Acts of the Apostles" of the New Testament (Acts 1: 15-26).
His memorial day is May 14. He is buried in the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Matthias in Trier (Germany), which is the only apostle's grave north of the Alps, and a number of Saint Matthias Brotherhoods (SMB) make regular pilgrimages there.
