The Holzmaar is located in the Vulkaneifel almost halfway between Gillenfeld and Eckfeld. The maar has a size of approx. 6.8 ha with a diameter of 325 m and a depth of 21 m; it is located in a nature reserve and is almost entirely surrounded by forest. It is fed by a headwater of the Sammetbach, which crosses the Maar. The Dürre Maar is also in the immediate vicinity.
