The church is a popular excursion destination because of its location on the slope of the Sulzberg above the Inn Valley. Next to the church there is also a listed inn. Georg Tanner founded a hermitage on the site of today's church in 1659. A depiction of Mariahilf on display, a copy of the Innsbruck miraculous image of Mariahilf by Lucas Cranach the Elder, soon attracted pilgrims. Because of this, a wooden chapel was built in 1687, which gave way to a stone church in 1716. In 1750, at the behest of Count Johann Maximilian IV Emanuel von Preysing, the foundation stone was laid for the construction of a larger pilgrimage church, which met the increased demands and was completed in 1763. The nephew of the deceased donor added some exhibits to the church, including the altar.
