Best Hikes to Historic Center of Marienborn

Tips

  • Impressive complex with many historic buildings. It's a shame that some things are falling apart. But there is also some in restoration. The altar in the church is great.

In the pilgrimage town of Marienborn we find a historic building ensemble with a monastery, church, castle, rectory, brewery, orangery and the Marienkapelle (Fig. 2). Built for the pilgrims at the beginning of the 13th century, the hospice can probably be considered the predecessor of the nunnery of the Augustinians (first mentioned in 1253), which was converted into a noble lady's residence during the Reformation and was abolished in 1810. The monastery church, which dates back to the 13th century, has been extensively rebuilt and modified. From the first construction phase comes the Late Romanesque portal in the south wall of the tower. In 1885, a fundamental transformation took place, including the construction of the western apse. The two winged altars from the 15th century inside are a special treasure. The epitaphs and grave slabs in the late Gothic, once four-winged cloister on the north side of the church are also from the monastery.
The still existing west wing of the monastery complex with the former nun cells was built in late Gothic style in the second half of the 15th century with a baroque first floor. Of the new abbey (called the castle) exists only the 1865 built west wing; the 1666 built south wing was demolished in 1935. The brewery, which ran until the 20th century, is one of the oldest buildings in the monastery complex. The parsonage, a two-storey half-timbered building, was built in 1784, another landmark building, the schoolhouse, 1824. The orangery in the style of a Doric temple between two glasshouses was built in 1857 (Fig. 3).
