Construction of the church began in 1817 according to plans by the royal building inspector Bernhard Morell. The Pantheon in Rome served as a model. As you approach the town center from Haßfurt, it dominates the townscape. On the large open staircase in front of the church are statues of Saint Benedict and Saint Catherine. These figures come from the Benedictine abbey church of Obertheres, which was demolished during the secularization and whose hewn stones and blocks were used to build the Saint Andrew's Church.
