Location: Chaise-Dieu-Du-Theil, Évreux, Normandy, France
The chapel of St Jean is the oldest building in the village. It was consecrated as a church by the bishop of Evreux in 1132. Religious from Sainte Suzanne had come to settle on the banks of the Iton at the request of the lord of L'Aigle who wanted to benefit from the influence of an abbey. During the 12th century, the male community led by Abbot Hugues du Desert joined the order of Fontevraud, a mixed order placed under the authority of a priory. There were then two churches in Chaise Dieu: one for the nuns church (Notre Dame) and one for the monks and servants of the monastery (St Jean church later called "Chapelle"). (chairdieudutheil.fr).
