The name originates from the Spanish word, amargo (bitter) and a shortened version of agua amargosa (bitter water) possibly referring to the alkaline water.
The river winds through the Amargosa Canyon, straddling the Sperry Hills and the Dumont Hills, before entering into the Dumont Dunes in the northern Mojave Desert.
