Built between 1624 and 1698, the Colossus of San Carlo is a statue that reaches 36 meters in height (of which 11 are on the pedestal). The "Sancarlone" is the largest statue in Europe and for two centuries it was the tallest monument in the world among the statues that can be visited inside. The colossal statue, measuring 36 meters in total, was created at the end of the 17th century by Giovan Battista Crespi. SAN CARLO BORROMEO, Cardinal of Milan, comes from an influential family of counts based in Arona; his homeland has paid him unmistakable tribute here with this walk-in monument.
The feast day of Saint Charles Borromeo in the calendar of saints is November 4th.
