The castle is located above the town of Osek (Ossegg) in the Bohemian Ore Mountains in the Czech Republic.
The castle was completed around 1250 by Boreš II Hrabišic (also called Boresch von Riesenburg), the court marshal of the Bohemian King Wenceslas I. He was the first of the Hrabischitz family to call himself "von Riesenburg." It was a very large complex (200 meters long and 95 meters wide).
* Change of ownership and decline: At the end of the 14th century, the Hrabischitz family lost their power and sold the castle to the Margrave of Meissen in 1358. Later, it changed hands several times.
