    Tips

    June 24, 2023

At about 2000 m you emerge from the vegetation composed mostly of mountain pine and green alder, and above this, you come across shrubs such as dwarf juniper and rhododendron, and flowers such as buttercup and gentian. You always go up along a beautiful military mule track which with long hairpin bends climbs the southern slope of Piz di Olda. At each hairpin bend the view changes, and in those to the north, new panoramas open up towards Edolo, with the high mountains of Valtellina and Switzerland in the background. In the last stretch of this suggestive road, in some sections eroded by avalanches and small landslides, it is advisable to go up with a push bike. At an altitude of about 2350m, the road changes in width and becomes a track that crosses some stony ground: here you have to go down. You finally reach the crest and the Piz dell'Olda is there at 200 m. At this point it is better to leave the bike on the ground and walk the short distance that separates us from the summit. Once you reach the summit, the panorama pays off for everything: looking west, the Adamello stands out with its 3539m asl together with the other peaks of the group, to the north-east the glacier where the Piz stands out is visible. Bernina with its 4050m above sea level, the Orobie Alps tower to the east and the view to the south is lost in the Val Camonica valley.

The main advice is to look closely at the weather forecast and be equipped for any eventuality; a storm at that altitude and where you can't take refuge anywhere, can be a problem.
