    Founded nearly 180 years ago, the Avranches Museum of Art and History is one of the oldest museums in western France. Sheltered within the walls of the “old town”, the museum is located in the former episcopal enclosure. Become a prison during the French Revolution, the main building was, in the 12th century, the residence of the bishops of Avranches before becoming the Officiality around 1269.
    The current Museum of Art and History has been open since 1967. It preserves and presents interesting archaeological collections, as well as a collection of paintings by local artists to discover. Two rooms are dedicated to popular arts and traditions, with the reconstruction of a Norman interior, regional furniture and traditional costumes.
    Upstairs, the dark hours experienced by the Avranchinese during the Second World War are recounted through four rooms: the Occupation, the Resistance, the bombings and the Reconstruction.
    HOURS: June 1 - September 30, Wednesday to Sunday: 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. & 2 p.m. - 6 p.m.
