Before running water was introduced into homes, villages had public washhouses where women (mostly maids) washed their laundry. These were also places where people went to socialize and chat. An important part of women's social life took place there—a daily meeting point, so to speak, where they could hear the latest news and village gossip.
The first washerwomen were forced to wash their laundry in the river, on their knees, and outdoors in all kinds of weather.
