Built in the 16th century from volcanic stone, the Notre-Dame du Grau church bears witness to the ancient history of this maritime district of Agde. Nearby, the Notre-Dame de l’Agenouillade chapel is associated with a famous local legend. In the 5th century, the Virgin is said to have appeared in prayer on a rock and repelled the waters during a violent flood. A footprint, attributed to her knee, is said to have remained engraved in the stone ever since.

From a historical point of view, a building housing the congregation of Benedictines, affiliated with the Abbey of Saint-Thibéry, was first mentioned in 990.
In 1187, "Bernard Aton donated all that he possessed in the estate, the city of Agde, its outbuildings... he made this donation before the altar of the church of Notre Dame du Grau" (HGL, T. 5, L. XX, p.5).
It was not until 1584 that Henry I de Montmorency decided to build a larger building on this site and settle the Capuchin fathers there.
