Church of st. Catherine of Alexandria in Nawra, where the grace-famous painting of Our Lady of Nawrzyńska is located, miraculously saved despite the turbulent history of the church itself.
The history of this painting dates back to the times of King Sigismund III Vasa. During the expedition to Moscow (1609-1618), Bernard Kruszyński, the heir of Nawra, the judge of the Chełmno land, was taken prisoner by the Russians. The judge was a devout and practicing Catholic, and he prayed for the help of the Mother of God. Seven difficult years passed, and the judge still believed that he would return to his homeland and his Nawra. Leaving prison, he took with him the memory of the Most Holy Mother of God. He placed this good aura (also in the form of a picture painted by an anonymous artist on a linden board) in his palace in Nawra, but he was convinced that the best place would be a church.
