The river flows from the Anhausen monastery near Herbrechtingen in a loop of the narrowing valley around the "Buigen" ridge. The Brenz initially flows from Anhausen for about three kilometers in a south and southeast direction, past the abandoned Bindstein Castle and Falkenstein Castle (municipality of Gerstetten). After a bend in the Eselsburg district (Herbrechtingen), it heads north to Herbrechtingen, where the Brenz turns sharply to the east. The Eselsburg valley is known above all for its natural beauty; the most famous of these is the "Stone Maidens". At the southernmost point of the valley is the Spitzbubenhöhle.
