The Mendelbahn is a funicular railway that runs from the St. Anton district of Kaltern up to the Mendel Pass. The elevation difference between the summit and valley stations is 854 meters. With the guest card (Südtirolcard), you can even use the railway for free. 😊We used the railway on a bike tour 🚴 from Tramin. We rode it up 🚡 and hiked down. 🥾

With a 64% gradient, you'd hope the technology is sound. Relief: the railway was designed by a Swiss engineer, Emil Strub. Opened in 1903, the Mendelbahn was the first electrically operated railway in Tyrol and the steepest and longest continuous funicular railway in Europe. The journey to the Mendel Pass is an experience in itself. And the uplifting panoramic view over the Etsch Valley and the South Tyrolean lowlands is just as breathtaking!

One of the steepest funiculars in Europe. It starts from Sant'Antonio presso Caldaro at 510 m above sea level and will take you to Passo della Mendola (1,364 m above sea level). From the Mendola Pass you have a beautiful view.
