The beginnings of the coin collection at the Universalmuseum Joanneum go back to Archduke Johann, who stated in the founding statutes of the Joanneum in 1811 that "domestic coins of all metal types should be grouped together". Again and again, the donor personally donated coins to the Joanneum, which he found in the course of his activities to research the history of the country; In 1819, for example, he presented the museum with a 40 nummia coin belonging to the Byzantine Emperor Phocas (AD 602–610), which he had excavated near Knittelfeld in Upper Styria.
