Nine Stones Close, the tallest of all the Peak District's stone circles, lies away from the official footpath, sitting in a secluded spot in the corner of a field. Only four stones remain of this former nine-stone circle. The origin of the name 'Nine Stones' is unclear. It may date back to an earlier time when more stones survived. Its other name, 'The Grey Ladies', relates to local folklore that the stones are transformed to dancing women at midnight.

This is a nice spot to watch the comings and goings on Robin Hoods stride, also to the NW of this seeks to be another stone circle, although not investigated.
