In 1220, the archbishop of Mainz built a stately fortress on the site where a private castle had previously stood
    permit.
For a long time, Ehrenfels Castle was used to levy a transit toll on ships at the notorious "Binger Loch". The "Binger Loch" is a natural bottleneck on the Rhine with a quartzite reef running across the river. It was only between the 17th and 20th centuries that the fairway in the "Binger Loch" could be widened by blasting. Because of its strategically favorable location, Ehrenfels Castle was hard fought during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and during the Palatinate War of Succession in Destroyed in 1689 by troops of the French King Louis IVX.
The castle ruins are now owned by the state of Hesse and are not accessible to visitors. From here you can also see the "Mouse Tower", which is located in the middle of the Rhine on a small island in front of Bingen. It was built in the 14th century as a watchtower for the Ehrenfels customs castle was rebuilt by the Prussians as a signal tower for shipping. The Mouse Tower served as a shipping signal station until 1974. It was extensively renovated in 2014 and has shone in new splendor ever since. It owes its name to a legend from the 14th century that relates to the hard-hearted archbishop of Mainz Hatto Il.
The castle ruins are framed by excellent vineyards. Even a grape variety is named after the castle.
