    Hiking

Although the hike up 3,354 (1,102 m) Mount Verstovia is steep and challenging, on clear days you are rewarded with stupendous views over Sitka and the rest of Baranof Island.

Casual hikers might want to turn around at Picnic Rock, or at least give yourselves plenty of time and energy to get safely up to the summit of Mount Verstovia and then down again; the latter part of the hike often feels like more of a scramble/climb than a casual trek.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main landmarks and viewpoints along the Mount Verstovia trail?

The trail offers several notable landmarks. Approximately 0.5 miles west of the main summit, you'll find Picnic Rock (also known historically as Cross Mountain or Kanéisti Shaa by the Tlingit people). This sub-peak, at 2,550 feet, provides excellent 360-degree vistas and is a popular resting spot. The main summit itself is locally referred to as Arrowhead due to its distinctive shape. Along the lower sections, you can also find historical evidence of Russian logging from 1860, including charcoal pits, about a quarter-mile up the trail.

Is there designated parking available at the Mount Verstovia trailhead?

Yes, there is a trailhead parking area for Mount Verstovia. However, it's important to note that parking can fill up quickly, especially during peak hiking season or on weekends. Arriving early in the morning is often recommended to secure a spot.

How long does it typically take to hike to the summit of Kanéisdi Shaa (Mount Verstovia)?

The hike to the summit of Mount Verstovia is challenging and can take a significant amount of time. While exact durations vary based on fitness levels and conditions, hikers should generally plan for a full day. Many casual hikers opt to turn around at Picnic Rock, which is a rewarding intermediate destination. If attempting the full summit, ensure you allow ample time for both the ascent and the equally demanding descent.

Is the Mount Verstovia trail suitable for families or beginner hikers?

The Mount Verstovia trail is generally considered challenging due to its steep grades, wet and muddy sections, and rocky terrain. It is not typically recommended for beginner hikers or very young children. However, families with older, experienced children might find the trek to Picnic Rock to be a more manageable and rewarding option, as it still offers spectacular views without the full summit push.

Are dogs allowed on the Mount Verstovia trail?

Yes, dogs are generally permitted on the Mount Verstovia trail. However, given the trail's challenging nature, including steep sections, roots, rocks, and potentially slippery conditions, ensure your dog is fit enough for the strenuous hike. Always keep dogs on a leash and practice Leave No Trace principles by packing out all waste.

What are the typical weather conditions at the summit of Mount Verstovia?

Weather conditions at the summit of Mount Verstovia can be significantly different from those at the trailhead, often being colder, windier, and more exposed. Even on clear days, conditions can change rapidly. Hikers should be prepared for alpine weather, including potential fog, rain, or strong winds, regardless of the forecast at lower elevations. Always check the local forecast and pack layers.

What kind of wildlife might I encounter on the Mount Verstovia trail?

The diverse ecosystems of Mount Verstovia support various wildlife. Hikers commonly spot Sitka black-tailed deer, especially in the forested and sub-alpine areas. Bald eagles are also frequently seen soaring above the peaks and along the coast. While less common, other Alaskan wildlife may be present, so it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings and practice safe wildlife viewing.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options near the Mount Verstovia trailhead?

The Mount Verstovia trailhead is located just 2.6 miles east of downtown Sitka, Alaska. Sitka offers a range of amenities, including various cafes, restaurants, pubs, and accommodation options such as hotels, B&Bs, and vacation rentals. You'll find everything you need for pre- or post-hike refreshments and lodging within a short drive from the trailhead.

Is Kanéisdi Shaa (Mount Verstovia) suitable for a winter hike?

While the alpine bowl east of Picnic Rock is popular for non-motorized winter recreation like skiing, snowboarding, and sledding, a full winter hike to the summit of Mount Verstovia is significantly more challenging and should only be attempted by experienced hikers with appropriate winter gear and avalanche awareness. The trail can be covered in deep snow and ice, making navigation and footing difficult and increasing objective hazards.

What specific gear or clothing is recommended for hiking Mount Verstovia?

Given the challenging and varied terrain, hikers should wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support. Layered clothing is essential to adapt to changing weather conditions, including a waterproof and windproof outer shell. Other recommended items include plenty of water, high-energy snacks, a map and compass or GPS device, a first-aid kit, trekking poles for stability on steep sections, and sun protection. For the upper sections, gloves and a warm hat are advisable even in summer.
