The Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve covers over a thousand hectares of land and is considered the most significant Italian wetland: it is all that remains of the ancient Prile Lake, which came to occupy 50 square kilometers and was drained in the 19th century. The marsh currently occupies about 700 hectares, close to the pine forest of Castiglione della Pescaia and extends over the plain that connects the seaside resort with Grosseto.
