The Ripoll river rises in the Granera mountain range and crosses the municipalities of Castellar del Vallès, Sabadell, Barberà del Vallès, Ripollet and Montcada i Reixac, which means a distance of about 40 km until it flows into the Besòs river. The Ripoll has played a key role in the social and economic development of these municipalities, because in the Middle Ages, flour mills were installed in its course, later paper mills and drapers. Its waters have also been used to irrigate crop areas.
