    Catherine's Church in the wartime...

Historical interpretation: During the liberation of Zoutelande, the Catherina church was hit by shrapnel from grenades. The roof, buttresses and windows are damaged and the constory is completely destroyed. The church building can no longer be used.

In 1947 a start can be made with the repair work, which will be carried out by Zouteland contractors.

The restored church was reopened in 1950.

      About this location

Around the year 1270, the Catharina Church of Zoutelande was founded from the then neighboring village of Werendijke. The current church tower probably dates from that time. The current church building was built in the 14th century, but was then almost twice as long and ended in a three-part choir. At the level of the current vestry there was a transept so that the whole was a so-called 'cross church'. The transepts were probably demolished in the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), when the village and the church had fallen into considerable disrepair.

During the Second World War (1940-1945) the church was hit so hard by a shelling on November 2, 1944, that the church could no longer be used for worship. The roof of the church was then provisionally closed with plates to prevent further damage. An emergency church was temporarily put into use on the Duinweg. Despite the provisional closure of the church roof, after the inundation of Walcheren between 1944 and 1946, it turned out that the damage had increased. During the restoration, the new vestry was built more in the style of the church, the ceiling of the church has been removed so that the barrel vault is visible again and the space under the tower has been added to the church. On January 28, 1950, the renovated Catharina Church was reopened.

Church service is every Sunday at 9:30 am.

A very nice little church right in the village. The symbol of Zoutelande.
