Instead of a dam, a cut in the hilly terrain was required near Dörlbach. The resulting excavated material was used to fill up the dams. In this way, the canal could be routed over long distances without locks.
Technical data: Length: 870 m - Depth: 14.50 m
Geology: Limestone, Posidonia Shale, Amalthean ClayAlmost all work had to be done "by hand", i.e. with a pick and shovel. The only mechanical support was provided by the steam-powered shovel excavator designed by Nuremberg mechanic J.W.Spaeth. Up to 150 pounds of powder/day were used for blasting.
Some of the workers built their own shelters. 300 sewer workers were housed in the "Dörlbacher Kaserne". There were also craftsmen for tools and clothing, as well as a bakery. At the beginning of 2005, a landslide occurred on the south side - west of the bridge. This continued across the page.
