Hornberg Castle was built about 800 years ago by the Lords of Fautsburg. In 1252, for the first time, a man Heinrich von Hornberg was mentioned in a document. When the last Hornberger died in 1399, much of the property was already sold to the Margrave of Baden and the counts of Württemberg. The two mansions divided from there the entire property. This shared ownership meant that the Swabian reformer Johannes Brenz was able to hide in the castle in 1548 without being pursued by the imperial troops. Subsequently, the castle fell into decay. 1603 Badener sold the castle Hornberg together with the city of Altensteig to the house Württemberg. Of the original buildings, only the lower two-thirds of the tower survived.
In 1958, the International Forum Burg Liebenzell begins with the reconstruction. Initially, the tower is used as accommodation for the Franco-German Youth Exchange. French and German pioneers build an access road made of material from the disused narrow-gauge railway "Altensteigerle".
In 1971, the Landesforstverwaltung Baden-Württemberg took over the building and in 1972 opened the first Waldschulheim in the state.
September 2010 to October 2011, the Waldschulheim was due to major renovations out of service. Since mid-October 2011, we are pleased to welcome again school classes and groups in our new walls.

There are no sightseeing or opportunities to take a closer look at the castle as it is not intended for the public. But you can still stop by and look at the building from the outside.

Superbly maintained. Unfortunately, the public can only admire it from the outside.
