The Old Bridge (formerly Karl-Theodor Bridge) is a bridge over the Neckar in Heidelberg. It connects the old town with the opposing banks of the Neckar at the eastern end of the Neuenheim district. It is one of the last great examples of classic bridge building in stone. The Old Bridge from Neckar valley sandstone was built in 1788 under Elector Karl Theodor as a total ninth bridge at this point. The predecessors of today's Old Bridge were made of wood. Since they were repeatedly destroyed by wars and floods, Elector Karl Theodor had a stone bridge across the river build (1786-1788). On the city side, the medieval bridge gate, part of the former city wall, is preserved. On March 29, 1945, one of the last days of the war, German soldiers blew up the Heidelberg Neckar bridges and also the Alte Brücke. Thanks to a generously supported by the citizen donation campaign could begin on 14 March 1946, the reconstruction. In July 1947 was the inauguration. Today it is one of the most famous sights and landmarks of Heidelberg. It is used for pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

The two sculptural groups of sculptor Konrad Linck on both oriels of the Old Bridge are the monuments of the builder of the bridge, Elector Karl Theodor, and the Roman goddess Minerva. The memorial of the Elector is closer to the southern bank of the Neckar. The figures on the two-level pedestal around the monument symbolize the most important rivers in the territories ruled by Karl Theodor: Rhine and Mosel, Danube and Isar. The second monument is dedicated to the goddess of wisdom. On the north bank of the bridge the bridge patron Johannes Nepomuk is shown.

Also the well-known "bridge monkey" is a popular photo motive. With his reproved mirror, the monkey is to show his own face to his viewer and thus to mock him. As early as the 15th century, a bridge monkey was mentioned on the Old Bridge. The present bronze sculpture of P. Gernot would be set up in 1979.

It is said in superstition: If the visitor strokes the mirror, then brings prosperity. Whoever strokes the outstretched fingers of his right hand, comes back to Heidelberg. To paint about the mice means many children ...

A cycle path officially leads across the bridge. In practice, however, you have to push here because of the mass of tourists. Nevertheless, "duty" when crossing Heidelberg. My tip: There are many benches on the north bank of the Neckar. Take a break there and enjoy the view over the city.
