The church of Dittmannsdorf is probably the oldest church in the surrounding area. It was built between 1170 and 1250 as a wayside chapel on the Bohemian Trail, a once important trade route between Halle and Bohemia. Here, passing merchants could rest and pray. They prayed for safety on the dreaded journey through the impassable thicket of the rugged Ore Mountains forest. They gave thanks when they returned unscathed and from the deserted wilderness back into civilized territory. The church was probably dedicated to Nicholas, the saint of merchants, as suggested by an inscription on the small bell.
