The forerunner of the Neuenwalde monastery was founded in Midlum in 1219, as reported in the oldest document on the history of the monastery. Archbishop Gieselbert moved it in 1282 to Altenwalde near the pilgrimage chapel there - a magnet for pilgrims. Due to the lack of fields, water, wood and mills, the convent planned another move to Neuenwalde just 50 years later, which was approved by Archbishop Burchard Grelle in 1334. The starting point for the new monastery settlement of Niggenwolde was the water mill on the Westerwedele river.
