The rafting profession has now died out, but it used to be a common activity in wooded areas. The main part of the task consisted of driving the felled trees down the rivers in a controlled manner, individually or in bundles, until they reached their destination. In this way, countless tree trunks were transported from Schiltach down the Kinzig into the Rhine, where they were forwarded to the North Sea and processed into ships, for example. The raft exhibited here is a reminder of the time when heavy transports were still carried out in harmony with nature.

      The "Schiltacher Raft"

      Technical specifications:
      Size: about 60 x 2.40 meters
Number of sturgeons (parts of the raft): 6
      Timber: approx. 26 running meters
      Total weight: approx. 16 tons
      Construction time: approx. 3 months

The raft was built from December 2000 to February 2001. The wood comes from the local city forest and was "felled" by the storm "Lothar" on 26.12.1999.
The sturgeons were assembled by the Schiltacher raftsmen according to historical tradition. The design of the raft corresponds to a historic mountain or valley raft with "Vorplätz" (front raft control unit), four disturbances and a brake raft (rear ram to brake the raft), as formerly built in the upper Kinzig valley.
From Wolfach down the front control device was provided with an additional rudder.
